COMING AT YOU THE WEEK OF 8.1.23
Hi.
I’ve got a big plan for this month.
1. You all share a favorite marketing gem with me (a useful marketing tool/framework/tip/etc.)
2. I share those brilliant ideas
3. We vote on the best idea shared
4. The winner—maybe you 😏—gets a one thousand dollar visa gift card
So, hit reply and tell me something you do that makes your worklife easier or makes you better at your job.
I’m not gonna lie, way less people are gonna do this than you’d expect. So if you send in something, I think your odds will be quite good to win $1000. I mean, c’mon! Let’s get some good tips rolling in here!
I’ll accept ideas you send me until midnight August 31.

Oh, and all this talk of priceless gems reminds me of Shel Silverstein’s poem, The Garden. “Ol’ man Simon, planted a diamond/ Grew hisself a garden the likes of none.” Read that out loud for instant serotonin.

GOOGLE MERCHANT HAS A CUSTOMER SUPPORT FEATURE NOW
Now you can add info to your merchant account, so people can access your customer support phone number, email, and URL directly on Google’s shopping features.
YOU CAN UPGRADE DSA AND GOOGLE DISPLAY CAMPAIGNS TO PMAX
Google is rolling out a “self-upgrade tool” to eligible ad accounts which lets Google use info and settings from your existing Dynamic Search Ads or Display campaigns to optimize and set up a new Performance Max campaign.
SHOPIFY ANNOUNCED THEIR OWN chatGPT THAT’S A TRAINED SHOPIFY EXPERT
Sidekick is a conversational AI assistant, like chatGPT. In the tool’s demo, Shopify showed off Sidekick’s cool tricks by asking it “How do I set up a discount for a holiday sale?” and “Help me segment my customers so I can better engage them in my marketing.” PLUS, you can have it help you accomplish Shopify tasks like creating reports showing your best-selling products.
OTHER UPDATES
On Threads, people can now easily follow someone who’s already following them
Google expands support for subdomains and info on how site names work in Search
Google tests categorizing reviews by type of reviewer
Microsoft Ads pilots UET Insights dashboard with new traffic data
X Tests New Ad Display, Which Would Replace Promoted Tags
In case you’re curious about why there are only three stories in the news section today, let me tell you a bit about how I choose what goes in the news section and what goes down in this OTHER UPDATES section below it.
Stories get prime time placement in the news section if they:
- Happened in the last 7 days
- Apply to most of the readers here
- Affect work that you guys do on a regular basis
- Need more than a one line explanation
Stories go into the OTHER UPDATES section if they happened in the last 7 days, but:
- Don’t really need more than a one line explanation, and/or
- Don’t apply to as many of the readers here
Sometimes there’s a slower week for updates, like today’s edition. And sometimes every platform makes a ton of changes in one week and there are a bunch of stuff.

I’ve been trying to figure out what the catch is with remove.bg and I don’t think there is one…?! It removes the background of your images automatically and for free.
*stamp of approval*
I’ve already used this multiple times in the few days since I discovered it. Btw, thanks to Josh Spector and his useful newsletter for telling me about this cool tool.

IUBENDA
It’s kind of a big deal when you don’t follow the law. And it’s also a big pain to understand all the privacy laws that our websites and apps need to follow. All that stuff has always freaked me out. Iubenda’s software is handy because, as they put pretty beautifully imo, “Iubenda supplies attorney-level solutions with the convenience that only software can provide.”
In a total sidenote, I think their site could be a nice inspo spot for you B2B friends. I’ve been impressed with their content/UX/copywriting and all that. The intro video on their homepage was *chef’s kiss*.
This link got upgraded from interesting stuff to a useful link because of its commentary about what made these videos viral and virality in general. But let’s be real, this page was mostly just fun to go down memory lane and watch videos from YouTube’s golden age. Do not click this link unless you’re ready for a rabbit hole.
GOOGLE’S ATTRIBUTION MODEL SHAKE-UP: 3 SOLUTIONS FOR ADVERTISERS
Google’s ditching four of its attribution models. This is an informative article about optimizing across conversion journeys through this change.
Forewarning: the author uses football analogies in this article. And they’re talking about foot, football. Not the football where they use their hands 99% of the time.

Engage
August 11 | Portland, OR
My PNW marketers representing here. Engage has some cool speakers this year like Rand Fishkin and Lily Ray.
Inbound
September 5-8 | Boston, MA
Hubspot hosts this one, so their reputation helps them land solid speakers. Plus, I hear the parties are pretty boppin’. (But as you can tell from my use of “boppin’” I do not often attend parties, so…)
Developer Marketing Summit
September 21-22 | Oakland, CA
If you have an audience of developers you market to, this is the place to check out.
Content Marketing World
September 27-28 | Washington, D.C.
The Content Marketing Institute puts this one on. They offer a ton of different sessions, so it’s easy to find info that applies to you. Plus, you get to hear from Ann Handley who is one of my faves.

Some of the links in my newsletters are affiliate links. So sometimes I get monies (aka dollary doos, aka sweet sweet dough) when you buy or sign up for some of the stuff I mention—at no extra cost to you.
