COMING AT YOU THE WEEK OF 8.8.23

What uuuupp??

In case you missed it last week, August is the “SHARE YOUR MARKETING GEM AND GET A FAT GIFT CARD FOR IT” month.

It’s where you guys hit reply and share one of these things with me:

  • A tool that helps your marketing or career efforts
  • A framework or strategy that you like using
  • Anything that improves your life as a working professional or marketer

Then, I’ll share the submissions and you guys will vote for the best one.

And the winner gets a $1000 Visa gift card. (Ooooh exciting)

It’s one of those things where you’re like, “Mmm. What’s the catch?” And I’m like, “I just want to get a bunch of good ideas from you and had some extra cash to throw around.”

I got some good tips from you guys last week!

But I’ll let ya in on a secret: people aren’t adding any extra pizazz to their ideas. So if you spend 8 minutes on this and throw in an image or a link. Or if you use that copywriter knowhow to spice up your submission. You may be well on your way to some fun cash.

I’m accepting your marketing gems until Aug 31.

MARKETING NEWS

GA4 RELEASED A NEW AUDIENCE REPORT

Google says this premade details report will help you identify your most engaged and profitable audiences.

WALMART IS LAUNCHING TARGETED IN-STORE ADS AT ITS CHECKOUTS

Soon customers might see “targeted ads from third parties” on the self-checkout screens. With the prominence of self-checkout, and the possibility of targeting the ads to people buying similar products or other products from your brand, I say color me intrigued.

Walmart is also busy cooking up other advertising offerings. They’re planning to play audio ads in stores, host demo/sample stations, and display QR codes to bring customers to discount codes or other content.

THERE ARE TWO NEW PARAMETERS AROUND INSTAGRAM COLD OUTREACH

These parameters apply when you DM people on Instagram that don’t follow your account.

(1) You can only send one message until the person accepts that message. You can’t send 3, 5, or a gagillion messages to someone who hasn’t shown that they want to hear from you yet.

(2) You can’t send any video or images to someone until they accept your message or follow you.

This update might be disappointing to the small jewelry businesses that sends pictures of their products to me when they ask if I want to join their ambassador program. (No hate here, I’m flattered.) But it should be a win for everyone saved from unseemly and unsolicited images that sometimes pop up in their Insta inbox.

PEOPLE HAVE MORE POWER OVER WHAT APPEARS IN GOOGLE SEARCHES ABOUT THEM

Now you can ask Google to remove your contact info and “personal intimate images” from Google Search, if you know what I’m saying.

THERE ARE NEW APP STORE RULES FROM APPLE

Apple now requires any apps using a data-gathering API to share why they’re gathering data. If your rationale doesn’t align with Apple’s list of approved reasons, then you’re not supposed to collect the info. Anyone gathering data will need to declare their reason to Apple and soon add it to their app’s privacy manifesto.

TOOL OF THE WEEK

Are.na

This is a cool way of saving and organizing content. It’s a lot like a Pinterest board but more geared toward uploading your own content vs saving other people’s content. You can upload links and files (images, videos, PDFs, etc.). And you can type text right on the board.

You can create these boards and then share them, which could be a unique piece of content for your brand to make. There also cool for brainstorming and getting ideas off the ground.

It’s free for the first 200 blocks of content you upload or add.

ZERO-CLICK MARKETING 101

In a world where tracking a click might just become impossible, this is a good concept to get thinking about. This 5-minute video by Rand Fishkin gives you the basic concept.

HOW TO AVOID DISTRACTIONS WHILE WORKING FROM HOME

Can someone volunteer to be a hallway monitor and make sure I’m not going down rabbit holes when I should be focused at work. Or eating everything in my pantry. But also there are suggested apps and strategies in this article that are helpful.

LIFE-CHANGING CONCEPTS NEWSLETTERS

This is a newsletter that reveals familiar info in a new (and helpful) way or illustrates connections I hadn’t made before. I love the way it helps me come up with solutions to problems I’m facing at work. 10/10 would recommend.

RESPONSIVE SEARCH ADS: A GUIDE TO WRITING ADS THAT PERFORM

This guide by Google recommends:

  1. The more assets the better.
  2. Use Ad Strength to evaluate how well your responsive search ads are set up.
  3. Measure the right metrics when evaluating the performance of your responsive search ads.
  4. Asset performance ratings and ad variations can help you understand how to improve responsive search ads after they’ve garnered enough data.
  5. Use responsive search ads with Smart Bidding and broad match.
    EVENTS

    Inbound
    September 5-8 | Boston, MA
Hubspot hosts this one, so their reputation helps them land solid speakers. Plus, I hear the parties are pretty boppin’. (But as you can tell from my use of “boppin’” I do not often attend parties, so…)

    Developer Marketing Summit
    September 21-22 | Oakland, CA
If you have an audience of developers you market to, this is the place to check out.

    Content Marketing World
    September 27-28 | Washington, D.C.
The Content Marketing Institute puts this one on. They offer a ton of different sessions, so it’s easy to find info that applies to you. Plus, you get to hear from Ann Handley who is one of my faves.

    INTERESTING STUFF

Some of the links in my newsletters are affiliate links. So sometimes I get monies (aka dollary doos, aka sweet sweet dough) when you buy or sign up for some of the stuff I mention—at no extra cost to you.
